The Evolution of Meaning

In the final chapter of his book “The Evolution of the Social Contract” Skyrms approaches “The Evolution of Meaning.” This should not be misunderstood as an overly ambitious attempt at explaining the origin and nature of linguistic meaning. Rather, he attempts to provide an account of the likelihood of the evolution of socially shared indexical meaning. In other words, this post will largely be an expansion upon the previous post which dealt with the evolution of correlated convention. (more…)
